Though Limit and No Limit Poker have basically the same rules, the format varies in the betting amounts. In No Limit, a player can push in any amount of chips as long as the bet is equal to the big blind or a raise is twice as much as a previous bet. If a player has too few chips to meet that amount, then that player can simply bet all their chips and go “all-in.”

In limit poker, the betting amounts are fixed at certain levels. These games are often referred to by their bet amounts, such as 1-2 or 20-40, referencing the blind bet amounts and an increased turn level bet. In most card rooms, the turn card bet is larger than, typically twice as much as, the big blind. Limit online poker imposes a cap on the betting since only three raises can be made during any betting round. This game will tend to draw players who are reluctant to bet off all their chips at once. However, just because the betting is capped, does not mean the pots are always small. A turn bet that is raised, then re-raised can create substantial pots.

The risk factor in the two forms is very different. In Limit online poker, each player absolutely knows how high the betting can go each round. In No Limit poker, one does not know how high the betting will get and must recognize that it could be as much as the biggest stack on the table at any time.

There’s been a heated debate over gambling as a sport. ESPN surely sees it as one, as it broadcasts poker games at least one night every week. The players see it as one, as it requires, skill, concentration, and physical and mental resilience.

But I was reading an article from the ChicagoNow.com Blogs and there was a particular article which caught my eye. Poker as an Olympic sport. The writer of course saw all gambling games, poker, bridge, backgammon among others as gambling games. And I knew from the very first sentence that this op-ed was going to be biased. Instead of players, this opionated individual called those who gamble “hustlers.” As a poker online player myself, I consider this insulting at best and a distasteful stereotype at worst. Apparently in his eyes, if we’re playing poker, we must be hustlers cheating people out of their money.

But it went on and it was more shocking, as in my chin literally fell to the floor aghast. I learned that this particular writer views Golf as a gambling game. No my friend, I’m sorry Golf is not a game of chance, but it is a game where players compete to win after months or years of practice.

So how does he separate golf from poker. Well he says that at least golf is the most strenuous gambling game and that at least the players have to move.

Let’s get some back story here, the initial commentary in the article suggested whether or not Poker or any of it “gambling game” counterparts should be let in the Olympics. Now Golf is in for the 2016 games, but I think unlike our dear author, Golf is a true sport.

But he does raise an interesting question. Is poker a sport that should be worth of the Olympic games? I think this would make for good discussion in poker circles. My personal opinion is yes. I believe you have to be in decent mental and physical shape to play poker and win. You start getting tired and play sloppy, you start to lose. You can’t stay focused on the game and get bored, you lose. I easily see poker as a game of skill with just a hint of chance. And I think we as the poker playing community could demonstrate this with the consistent winners of WSOP and WPT bracelets. With certain players continually placing high or winning these events, it demonstrates by example that these players are top players, just like the best golfers, and just like the best basketball players. Perhaps we can generate some discussion about this with other poker players, next time you’re playing in a game be it at home online, or at a casino or bar bring up the topic and see what kind of responses you get.

Jack eight is oddly known as the Jeffrey Dahmer poker hand, for the phrase ‘ate Jack.’ A less salty name for the same hand is Jacket, for the way the two words run together. Jack eight is not the worse of the poker online hands you could get stuck playing. There’s a decent range of middle cards that could conceivably come and coordinate with it on the flop. I wouldn’t go calling raises with it, but at a smaller or slower game I might raise with it in position and try to make a weird hand or run through with picking up the blinds or taking the pot on the continuation bet, but that would only be infrequently. One good thing about the jack eight is that it won’t tend to get you in trouble when you miss, but you will miss often, making it true that a lot of the time, if you can’t power your way through, you will be just donking off online poker chips. Save this one for when you are super bored, or really dominating, or when the position of the table just demands you take what is yours. Otherwise, I’d give it a day off, and wait for something a little more.

Bad news for Texas Hold Em poker fans, and fans of gambling and casino online in general, who live in Singapore: a number of casinos that were supposed to be built in the country are facing troubles due to the global financial crisis. According to Reuters, Genting International, the overseas arm of Malaysia’s Genting Bhd, and Las Vegas Sands are reportedly facing more cost overruns on their casino-resort projects in Singapore. Genting International said that its Resorts World at Sentosa, which is scheduled to open early next year, will cost S$6.59 billion compared with the previous estimate of S$6 billion, Reuters reported. Genting had originally projected the cost of the poker online project at S$5.2 billion. Las Vegas Sands Corp has also been hit by spiralling construction costs in Singapore, The Straits Times newspaper said on Friday. Sands recently revised the cost of its Marina Bay Sands casino-resort to $5.4 bil, according to the news agency. lion versus the previous estimate of $4.5 billion and an initial estimate of $3.2 billion.
