Addressing the Canny Investor

Hand Analysis: 8-Jack

Jack eight is oddly known as the Jeffrey Dahmer poker hand, for the phrase ‘ate Jack.’ A less salty name for the same hand is Jacket, for the way the two words run together. Jack eight is not the worse of the poker online hands you could get stuck playing. There’s a decent range of middle cards that could conceivably come and coordinate with it on the flop. I wouldn’t go calling raises with it, but at a smaller or slower game I might raise with it in position and try to make a weird hand or run through with picking up the blinds or taking the pot on the continuation bet, but that would only be infrequently. One good thing about the jack eight is that it won’t tend to get you in trouble when you miss, but you will miss often, making it true that a lot of the time, if you can’t power your way through, you will be just donking off online poker chips. Save this one for when you are super bored, or really dominating, or when the position of the table just demands you take what is yours. Otherwise, I’d give it a day off, and wait for something a little more.

The Coaster: the Unsung Hero

If you belong to a casual online poker group, you have probably noticed that some people are absolutely fanatical about their poker online table. These are the guys with the brand new poker tables that are equipped with all the fancy details. These tables have chip holders and fancy felt coverings. The problem is that they are extremely fragile in actual practice. The enemy of these fancy poker tables is the simply drink. Given that drinks often accompany poker night, you could find yourself in a very bad situation. Just think about poker tables. They’re felt creations that can be damaged by simple condensation rings. You don’t think about how fragile they are until you have a glistening beverage and no where to put it. The best way to handle this situation is to give you overly fastidious friends some coasters. You can even find poker themed coasters so that they match with the theme of your online poker night. I know it may seem a little silly to talk about the beauty of the humble coaster on a poker website. Before you mock the idea, think about how much a simple coaster can make your poker game more enjoyable. You don’t want to go without the simple coaster.

Limping in Early Position with Large Pairs

It can sometimes be difficult, when dealt a big pair in early position, to get paid off as well as you’d like. Because of the presumption that most poker players are only going to enter early with big cards, opponents are often more wary of players coming in for a raise from under the gun or thereabouts.

Whereas in late position, against limpers or raisers, raising with poker en ligne pairs like AA and KK is standard procedure, it has become popular among certain types of players to limp in from those early spots with the big pairs, in hopes that someone later will then raise, allowing you to get more money in the pot before you yourself spring to action.

This method can be successful in picking up more pokermoney early on in the hand, and also leaving your opponents to wonder whether you have actually picked up a monster, or if you are trying to resteal their raise by merely representing the monster. It can either milk that doubt and get your opponent to put all his money in bad against you, or quickly clue them in and let them lay down with only that small-ish single initial raise lost. Either way, the key here is to vary your play, and not give them the ability to know exactly which is the case, and in the end you will be that much harder to pick up on.

Barry Greenstein High Stakes Cash Game

Blinds 400/800 200 ante, $200k minimum buy-in On a the newest batch of High Stakes Poker, and probably the best ever, the gamblers are getting younger while the old school player’s seem to be tightening up (except maybe Eli Elezra)..This is a pleasure to watch and is a good break from constant online poker

For the young players, Tom Dwan, Peter Eastgate, and Ilari “Ziigmund” Sahamies make their first appearances at the casino; two internet phenoms and the WSOP main event winner. Though Ziigmund is known as an action cash player playing poker online, he was pretty timid and quiet at the table.

Eli and Doyle are upset with the amount of time Dwan was taking to complete his action. Dwan retorts, saying that he probably takes no more time per dollar that he puts into the pot than anyone else. Basically, he’s telling the players, ‘look, I’m in a lot of hands, I’m giving action, I’m creating action, I’m risking a lot more money than a lot of players who are sitting back and folding, so let me take some time.” And he is absolutely justified.

There were a few very interesting hands. One hand was raised up by Eastgate with A,6 of hearts and he gets 3 callers. Dwan called with 6,7 clubs.

Doyle also has shown that he’s been slow playing big pairs. Early on with KK he made a 3x opener for $2500 and played a small pot. Later on he flat called Negreanu’s opening raise and proceeded to check call Elezra on a j,5,5,4,2 board for nearly $100k.

Unfortunately, Barry Greenstein also tried to play his AA similarly. In early position, UTG, he bet $2500 and the entire table called his bet. The table saw an 8-way flop of 2,10,2.

Greenstein was sitting with about 230k behind, about 300x big blind. Eastgate checked in 1st position. Barry led out at this flop for $10,000 and Dwan automatically raised to 37,300.

Eastgate calls with 2,4 and Barry calls. On Tips From the Bear, Greenstein says that he is basically calling this $27,300 more in hopes of hitting one of the two remaining aces. He was actually thinking of folding, but decided that even though he was not getting appropriate odds, 27k wasn’t too large a sum compared to the three player’s stack sizes. He also thought that Dwan could definitely be making a play.

Turn is the 7d. This blanks everybody. Eastgate and Greenstein both checked, and Dwan made it $104,200.
