The California Council for Interior Design Certification (CCIDC) board has the goal of replacing the CCRE along with the three national examinations with only a single certification examination. This will be available online at multiple examination sites across the state, starting in 2009.

During the past eight years, and as of today, to use the label Certified Interior Designer, you are required to sit for and pass one these exams - CQRID, NCIDQ, or two parts of the NKBA, as well as the additional California Codes and Regulations Examination - also known as the CCRE. Before then, passing only one required exam was required to earn you the title of Certified Interior Designer. These examinations were in supplement to the experience and education required and outlined by Section 5800 of the Business & Professions Code.

The intention of this change in exam protocol is to render the California interior design certification examination in compliance with Section 139 of the California Business and Professions Code. These changes will also make it readily available to those who fall within the three categories of education and experience under the law, as well as to those individuals with “experience only”.

A Certified Interior Designer must complete the exams and meet all other portions of the standards in order to achieve their title. The CCIDC is still recognizing the CCRE, and it has extended it its time frame for those who still wish to sit for it.
