Amount of Traffic Congestion in the UK Set to Worsen
Holiday traffic could face delays and detours because the Severn Bridge on the M48 is to be closed eastbound traffic from Wales this weekend, according to the AA. Anybody looking to take short weekend breaks in England will be facing severe delays.
Graham Smith, data manager at AA Trafficmaster, said the part-closure is due to routine maintenance.
“It seems a strange weekend to do it when so much holiday traffic is expected and it is likely to put more pressure on the second Severn Bridge crossing,” he said.
“The eastbound closure is likely to affect motorists heading out of the Chepstow area into England and they could face long detours, probably to the north, via Gloucester.”
He warned that the M4 in South Wales and the A55 bringing tourists from Merseyside into North Wales, are both likely to be very busy today too, although the high volume of traffic should ease off tomorrow.
“Even the off-peak periods could be busier than usual because more families are taking holidays in the UK this summer and there are lots of daytrippers about too,” he said.
“I have heard reports of problems at emergency roadworks at a tunnel on the A55 at Llanfairfechain and roadworks are continuing to cause delays to holiday traffic heading to Snowdonia at Corwen, on the A5 from Llangollen to Bangor.
“Our advice to motorists is to be patient, try to travel later to avoid peak times if heading towards busy routes, stagger your journey and be prepared for detours, with maps and sat-nav aids.”
He said an overturned caravan on the M5 yesterday in blustery conditions caused tailbacks for Welsh motorists heading to Devon and Cornwall.
