Running a mail order business from the comfort of one’s home is the dream of millions of people. Running a business through the mail appeals to people who are sick of their day jobs, want more independence in their lives, and who want to make large sums of money easily. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could go to your mailbox everyday and find is stuffed with money and checks from all over the world?

It’s possible, but be cautioned: mail order is definitely a risky business! For one thing, this is a realm that is definitely loaded with sharks … that is, there are a lot of mail order rip-off artists out there who are always trying to get you to try their system, plan, method, or whatever. They always promise “huge sales! enormous profits! $10,000 per month easy!” and that sort of thing.

Well, just about all of it is false - but you knew that, right?

If you are going to get started in mail order, you should ignore all the wild claims that are everywhere, and stick to a simple marketing strategy based on buying wholesale, advertising and selling at a profit. You can choose just about any product imaginable, from books and cigars, to turtle eggs and leach farms. Just make sure you sell your products at a profit, and that you make enough to cover your advertising and other expenses.

Starting a mail order business does not have to be a complex task. You choose a product, place classified or small display ads in national magazines, and wait for people to call in with their orders. Once the order has been received and payment has been made, you ship the product and take the money to the bank. That’s it in a nutshell.

There is also another way to sell other than buying ads. You can purchase mailing lists, which contain the the names and addresses of potential customers. You can buy lists from a number of places. There are list brokers, and you can also purchase lists directly from many magazine publishers, who derive names from their subscriptions lists. Once you have a list in hand, you will need sales materials, usually in the form of a sales letter, brochure, or something similar, to send to people. Your sales letter is what makes the pitch to the potential client. If the pitch is good enough, you will make good sales. If your pitch is not so good … well, you’ll be licking some pretty tough financial wounds.

While all this sounds easy, it is not quite as cut-and-dried as it seems. First of all, advertising is expensive. Even a tiny classified ad of less than 20 words can cost from $100 to $200, depending on where you place it. And no matter how large the circulation and how good the response, you will most likely need more than one classified ad to really get your business off the ground. In fact, you may need at least 10 ads, but 20 to 50 are much better. Anything less simply will not produce the response rate and cash flow you will need to make your operation viable. That means an upfront investment of about $1,000 in ads alone will be required.

On the other hand, it is true that just one classified ad can make you rich - but that is rare! Don’t be fooled into thinking that one ad in one newspaper will make all your dreams come true. The odds of winning a jackpot in Las Vegas is probably more likely.

Instead of relying on “pie in the sky” claims and methods, go about your mail order business in a small and practical way. First of all, you should not only choose a good product, but also carefully match that product with a market that will be interested in it. If you try to sell rock CDs at a senior citizen’s center will you have many sales? Not likely. But this is precisely the mistake that many mail order wannabe’s make. They choose just any product and buy any ad in any paper and expect everything to match up perfectly. If you are selling high-tech gadgets, advertise in magazines

that targets the gadget oriented crowd.

The same goes for mailing lists. You should specify to a list broker exactly the kind of customer you are seeking - customers that have a high probability of being interested in your product.

There are many other things to consider in the mail order business. Who will be your wholesale supplier? How do you find good products to sell? How do you write a classified as that really pulls? Should you pay a professional copywriter to produce your ads and your sales copy? How do you test market an ad or product? Why do you need to test market? How do you handle sales taxes? What are the postal and government regulations, and how do you stay out of trouble?

As you can see, mail order is much more complex than is apparent from the outset. We tell you this not to discourage you, but to save you from being lured into the lair of the rip-off artists, who will tell you that making money in mail order is as easy as watching TV or reading a book. It isn’t.

On the other hand, running a mail order business is an excellent and rewarding way to be self employed, if you do it the right way. Before you buy your first ad or choose your first product, do a lot of homework. Get yourself down to the library or local bookstore where you’ll find dozens of good books on the subject of mail order. Once you start reading, you’ll be hooked - and nothing makes for success like true enthusiasm for what you are doing.

Plantar faciitis and heel pain causes are related to several possible reasons. Plantar faciitis is the tearing and subsequent inflammation of the plantar fascia ligaments on the bottom of the foot, which in turn causes foot pain. Or when repeated stress and strain occur on the heel bone and surrounding soft tissue, the body tries to protect itself by forming a bone spur.

Plantar faciitis pain is often felt at the front part of the heel on the bottom of the foot. The pain spreads along the bottom of the foot towards the toes. The foot area that is tight is stretched as you put your weight on your foot, which causes a ‘hot’ pain that runs along the heel toward the toes. 2. Excessive Walking, Standing or Exercise - once a plantar faciitis problem begins, being on your feet more leads to additional tearing in the fascia. And tearing in the fascia area leads to inflammation and pain.

3. Obesity - you may have even gained weight since your heel pain began because of less activity. Excess weight transmits more stress to the plantar fascia area, causing plantar faciitis pain.

4. Poorly Fitting, Hard-Soled Uncomfortable Shoes - leather shoes may look great but can be uncomfortable for your feet. Well-made, good-fitting rubber-heeled shoes will better cushion the impact of the heel striking the surface and can help reduce heel pain.

5. Calcium Deposits - abnormal calcium deposits can form on the bottom of the foot resulting in foot pain.

Persons suffering from muscle inflammation, gout, lupus, alkalosis, arthritis or tendonitis seem to have a tendency for plantar faciitis problems and heel pain.

• Keep up with the competition, or

Your objective can be one, several, all of these, or it may be something that is not on this list. Our contention is that the objective of a commercial organization’s internet strategy is “to increase profits”, and the route to achieve this is by identifying, attracting, winning and retaining customers profitably.

Having agreed that this is a realistic objective to pursue, does your internet strategy support this? Some answers may be:

• It does and it is working
• It does and is partially working
• It has not been in operation long enough to have an informed judgement.
• It does not!

In reality it is either working or not! Your strategy must be to deliver customers to your business, getting them to your web site is only the first step. It is vital therefore to understand the nature of the internet user today. • people make instantaneous judgements about whether to stay on a site, and if a site doesn’t give the right impression users will bypass it

Added to this the search engine suppliers now know how to make money and are actively marketing their services. The net results are more sponsored sites, hence Pay per Click, or Cost per Click is starting to win over free listings. Other ways of driving prospects to your site such as email and banner advertising are reducing in effectiveness.

There are many organizations that will claim to help you improve your return on investment by driving guaranteed traffic to your site. But is it the right traffic? Having 10000 visits does not guarantee business,

B. Improving the effectiveness of your internet strategy

Bearing in mind the comments above, our view is that the key to successful internet marketing focuses on the four key points below, executed in the most cost effective manner.

1. Identification

• How many potential customers are actively looking to buy yours, or your competitors’, products/services?
- by identifying key search words for a product or service it is possible to determine the actual number of searches over a given period

• Can you increase this number?
- only half the population has a PC, but a large percentage of the population has a mobile phone
- refining search terms may give higher search numbers

• How can you find out who they are?
- do your existing customers know you have a website?
- in a B2B environment you can acquire business lists, though the accuracy of these is not always good.
- in B2C lists are also available. However, if an organization can create a viral (referral) environment better quality lists can be created
- the same applies to mobile phone users

• What is the most effective way of contacting them; Is it email, mobile phone (voice or text), search engine optimisation pay per click, banner?

- in most cases a combination of the above is required to drive an acceptable response rate per pound invested

2. Attraction

Having identified the target market and chosen your selected contact methods how can they be attracted to your web site?

• Pay per click will get them there if you have made a bid for your key words that put you near the top of the sponsored list. The question is how do you keep them there?
• Banners will only be effective if they offer something different, exciting and of real value to the searcher. The same applies to other internet advertising methods.
• Email can be really effective providing the mailing list has become an opt in list and if there is value for the recipient.
• As far as mobile phone is concerned, avoidance of high tariff response numbers is essential.
• Is there value for your existing customers to use your web site?

3. Winning

Having successfully attracted potential customers to your website, how do you get them to buy? One assumes that the products or services on offer are competitive in terms of price, brand and quality, therefore your site must:

• Give the right impression
- test market your site
- your customers views are more important than your web designers or advertising agency
- will it get the searchers attention?

• Be up to date
- ensure news pages are current
- check offers have not expired
- current offers must be appealing

• Reflect the search terms
- if some one searches on “used red ferrari”, get them directly to that page
- be easy to navigate
- make sure it is easy to move about
- make menus simple and clear

• Make the buying experience pleasant and rewarding. Even if the prospect is not buying, the minimum required from their visit is some personal information.

4. Retention

Customers are lost more often than not by poor service rather than quality. However, getting feedback is always difficult.

• Make the feedback process rewarding and fun
- it is difficult to get feedback, so why not present the process in a way that encourages the recipient to respond

• Find ways to make your satisfied customers your ambassadors
- the feedback process should be capable of rewarding the recipient for referring your products and services to other prospects

• Remarket regularly; it goes without saying that this a necessity, but remarket using the method that is most likely to drive results

• People don’t want points, they would rather have cash!
- loyalty schemes are good and they do encourage more spend
- however, if you offer cash back or a discount on a future purchase, and tie it into the feedback process it is more focused, probably less expensive and more effective.

Summary

• Have a clear, realistic, achievable, and measurable financial objective.
• The strategy should be to identify, attract, win and retain customers profitably
• An internet strategy is a business strategy and is not just a website
• Review it like any other strategy.

It’s not on purpose but this same scenario happens over and over with small and large businesses alike. The key is to develop a billing system so that you handle money collection the same way every time you do it. Think about it once, put the process into action and then monitor it regularly. Here are 5 ways put more cash in your pocket.

#1 Get your customers to pay upfront

Put a package together or estimate what the bill will be and get your customer to pay you before you ever start working.

Yes, you can do that.

Think about the number of programs, seminars, networking dinners, books, CDs, etc. you have paid for before you got to have it. If you set the expectation with your clients up front many will be happy to pay you in advance. It’s the surest way to get paid for your goods or services.

Not comfortable with getting payment in full, consider getting a deposit.

#2 Send invoices on a regular basis and make sure you get paid
Pick an invoicing day such as the 1st or 15th of the month. Set that on your (or your assistant or bookkeeper’s) calendar and do all billing at once. Make sure you have a system in place to make it easy to create invoices.

Get paid before you end up in a never-never land situation. One of my clients is a high end copy writer. She charges a deposit up front and then the balance once copy is complete. The problem was she would deliver the final product and the client wouldn’t pay the balance. She had nothing to hold on to because they already had her words. So we changed her process, now she never releases the final product until she has been paid in full.

#3 Automate, automate, automate

Got clients on a payment plan?

Have a recurring monthly fee?

Set up automated payment through a shopping cart service such as www.1shoppingcart.com. You tell it when to charge and how much and it does it for you. The money comes flying in.

But wait; my clients pay me by check. And they are always late.
Try sending a nice reminder email or make a kind reminder phone call the week before payment is due.

Talk to your bank. See if you can have people wire you payments. Cuts down on the strenuous task of finding a stamp.
Or set a policy. Something like two late check payments means they have to pay you by credit card.

#4 Make an effort to collect
Monitor the aging of your invoices. When it gets close to the due date, start calling. Don’t just expect that others are going to make paying you a priority. Call them, fax them, and email them. Ask them to pay with a credit card. Even if you don’t have a merchant account you can always have someone send you a payment through Paypal. It’s worth the small percentage they charge if it gets you paid. You are entitled to collect your hard earned cash. If you have to, turn your invoice over to a collection agency.

#5 Ensure your money actually gets to the bank
Is there money sitting in your Paypal account that you haven’t cashed out?

Are there checks sitting in a PO Box somewhere?

Are you reconciling to make sure your merchant account payments made it to the bank?

I was having a conversation with a client who told me her bookkeeper caught a large credit card payment that the bank “forgot” to credit to her account. As my Grandpa Lenny says, don’t assume the bank is always right.

Reconcile regularly.

Deposit regularly.

Get your money to the bank so it collects interest, not dust.

When they phone you and leave a message on your answering machine, they don’t even know that they have to state their names, the reason why they called and their own phone numbers and the best times you may call them back.

Most of them don’t even know how to create a folder or save or upload a file or install a software and yet they had signed up in 100 different affiliate programs and internet income opportunities and had dreams of making a million bucks overnight!

Is it any surprise that these people fail miserably?

The least that any serious business person should know how to do should be how to write a business letter.

Most of the people who fail in online income opportunity have no discipline and are disorganized.

They have the mistaken notion that working from home and doing an internet income opportunity program means that they can wake up anytime they like and that they can choose whether to work or not and when to work or not.

They fail to realize that doing an online income opportunity can be more demanding than doing a regular job.

Doing an online income opportunity requires more discipline and competence than a regular job because you may have to do many different chores all by yourself because at the beginning, you probably will be working alone and may not be able to hire helpers.

This means that you may have to play many roles and do so many things all at the same time.

Trump Towers have been known as the pinnacle of luxury condo living, but now the Trump name has come into the Miami condo market. The first Trump Tower condo to be complete will be the Trump Palace located in Sunny Isles directly on the ocean.
