Addressing the Canny Investor

Sales 101: Handling The Angry Customer

I am often reminded of the following true story whenever I encounter a hostile customer or prospect, witness a scene where someone is losing their cool or observe someone getting chewed out for something that they may or may not have done.

No one enjoys being yelled out, cursed at, bullied or manhandled in any form, whether physically or verbally. It does however, happen at times. What options do you have to diffuse the situation? Can you separate yourself from the abusive behavior being directed at you before you lose your cool and strike back? How can you keep your emotions in check so that you might still accomplish your task?

Several years ago, my brother, Jim, a stellar salesman, was attempting to set an appointment with a longtime out-of-state customer. He was unable to reach the man after numerous attempts. He faxed him, he e-mailed him, he left messages, he even mailed him letters, but to no avail. The man would not respond. This went on for weeks. His account soon became delinquent. What now?

It appears that this customer, let’s call him Mr. Frank Jones of the Jones Company, was extremely angry about a situation involving a shipment of goods that did not arrive on time and had caused him great inconvenience and loss of revenue. Everyone at Jim’s company had attempted everything possible to satisfy the order in a timely manner, but eventually fell victim to considerations beyond their control. They had done everything possible, including regularly communicating with the customer at the time, but things simply did not work out properly.

Jim was concerned. He had known Mr. Jones for a number of years and the Jones Company was a long-term customer of considerable value to his firm. Jim weighed his options and decided that the only thing left to do was to get in his car, make the three hour trip and show up on Mr. Jones’ doorstep at 8:00am on the following Monday morning.

Jim pulled up to the parking lot of the Jones Company at 7:50am the following Monday morning, and found Mr. Jones’ Mercedes in his regular parking place. He took a deep breath, prayed for a moment and proceeded out the door for the inevitable confrontation with Mr. Jones. Noticing him entering, Sue, the receptionist, promptly got out of her chair to meet him. Jim greeted her and asked to see Mr. Jones. “Ah… he’s not in today Jim, you should really try to call him first.” Jim started to explain what Sue already knew, and without further dialog, both realized that each of them were fully aware of the situation.

Jim smiled at her, made mention of Mr. Jones’ car out front, excused himself and began the long walk down the hall to Mr. Jones office. He knocked and peered inside to be instantly recognized by Mr. Jones. He jumped up from behind his desk as my brother calmly stepped just inside his office. What occurred next was the worst blast of foul language, nasty expressions and crude threats ever made by a person. Mr. Jones continued to yell and curse at Jim referencing him, his company, his family, his friends and anyone else he can think of. Sue cringed from down the hall expecting a horrid exchange.

As it was, there was no exchange. Jim simply stood there, directly in front of Mr. Jones until the verbal assault had finally concluded. Jim never said a word during the entire fifteen minute episode. He simply allowed Mr. Jones to vent. It wasn’t easy, but he did it.

Mr. Jones wanted a confrontation. He wanted Jim to speak so that he could continue his assault, but there was no response, only eye contact. Jim waited until it appeared that Mr. Jones was regaining his composure and simply said, with a straight, genuine expression on his face:

“Okay Frank; Don’t sugar-coat it. Give it to me straight.”

Frank started to laugh, and then he howled jovially for some time. He approached Jim, put his arm around his shoulder and gestured towards the sofa for them to sit together. Jim left thirty minutes later with the relationship repaired and an order in hand.

Wow! How many of us could have handled it that way. Could you keep your composure while being assailed from all directions? How did Jim succeed? He simply did the following:

1. Jim took action and continued to act until a solution was reached.
2. He put his personal feelings aside, removing his emotions from the equation.
3. He allowed the customer to vent until he was finished, without interruption.
4. He knew that in reality, there was actually nothing personal in Mr. Jones assault.
5. Jim was committed to keeping Mr. Jones’ business

Remember this story and learn from my brother Jim when you encounter an irate person or angry customer. Be smart. Live to sell another day!

Your Home Business…Choose It Carefully And Then Really Work It!

I’ve had many active and enthusiastic business team members that were their own worst enemies because they exhibited the classic “flea on a griddle” behavior pattern and jumped around chasing one business opportunity today, and then another one tomorrow without ever putting in enough sustained and focused effort to reasonably give themselves a chance to succeed at any of them.

I can really relate to this situation since I briefly fell prey to this same “dog in a meat market” syndrome when I first started my own home based business a few years ago. I caught myself trying to chase several different opportunities at once and not being very successful with any of them.

There are so many home business opportunities (some real, some not) that it takes real personal discipline to avoid the scattergun approach…you know, throw enough against the wall and something is bound to stick. In the early going, it is really important to resist this temptation and to stay tightly focused on a single business.

Some will argue that “I don’t want to have all my eggs in one basket”. To those people I say, diversification is fine, but only after you have achieved solid success with your initial business. A premature attempt at diversification will quite likely cause a loss of focus and actually slow down your success rate.

If your main marketing vehicle is a website, you can fairly easily leverage your initial success and effectively promote a few other complimentary and closely related home based business propositions from the same website. However, it is important not to go overboard and offer too many choices to visitors to your website. If you do, there is a good chance of confusing your visitors to the point where they will take no action and you have, in effect, diluted the effectiveness of your website.

Whatever you decide to do, you will need to stick with it for a reasonable length of time (give it at least one year) and put in a solid and sustained effort. Stay focused and don’t get discouraged. As much as you would like it to be, starting and developing a real home based business is certainly not an instant gratification situation.

How To Choose The Right Debt Consolidation Company For You

Once you have determined that debt consolidation is in your best financial interest, then the next step is to do some serious research. Since rates, programs and service vary greatly with each organization, it is essential to shop around. Many desperate people have lost large amounts of money simply by doing business with the first company that they contacted. Make sure that you do not rely solely on verbal promises; get everything in writing and read everything carefully before you sign it.

In general you should avoid companies who charge a large fee up front while promising to return your money once the consolidation process is complete. All fees should be discussed before any procedures begin. Ask the company about services other than debt consolidation. For example, do they provide a free budgeting session? Do they offer counseling? How much does it cost? How much time do they spend with you discussing your particular situation? The last thing you want is anyone pressuring you into making a quick decision. If after 10 minutes the company is pushing a fix-all program, you should be very skeptical.

You should also find out who funds the company. While it is good to know whether the group is non-profit or for profit, you should remember that just because the company is not for profit does not ensure that its practices will always be in your best interest. There are non-profit debt management companies that charge high rates, do a poor job and act unethically.

When you find an agency that appears to have competitive rates and a program appropriate for your situation, make sure you check it out with your state Attorney General and the Better Business Bureau. These groups will be able to tell you if there are any consumer complaints on file, and if the company is licensed. Taking these measures will help protect you from the surprisingly large number of debt management companies with questionable practices. Some companies misrepresent the terms of a debt consolidation agreement, do not explain all costs, charge very high fees, and/or fail to complete the promised services. There have even been cases where a business that offers “voluntary debt reorganization” does not explain that the debtor is in fact filing for bankruptcy.

Find out if the company is accredited through an independent, third party association such as the Council on Accreditation. It is also a good idea to ask what kind of training the counselors have that you will be working with. Are they certified? The National Foundation for Credit Counseling and the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies are two reputable companies with certified counselors.

Be wary of claims from organizations that present themselves as “credit repair clinics.” These companies will often claim that they can clean your credit report for a fee. What they don’t tell you is that you have the right to see your credit report and remove any inaccurate information for free. Other than removing incorrect information, there is nothing you or any company can do to automatically improve your credit.

In the end taking these precautions could save you thousands of dollars and many headaches.

The Essence of Worship (part 2)

Faith Fellowship Church…PO Box 1586…Broken Arrow, OK 74013…Pastor Terry Dashner

“Essence of Worship” (continued)

The essence of worship is where it’s at. I think you will agree with this statement if you read the first part of this document. So let’s move on. We’ve been talking about the localized and institutionalized worship of the Old Testament having been delocalized and deinstitutionalized in the New Testament because the saints worship God in spirit and truth. We see further evidence of this in Paul’s ministry. Paul calls his own ministry a “priestly service (of worship),” and he calls the converts themselves an “acceptable offering (in worship)” to God (Romans 15:16; cf. Philippians 2:17). He even calls the money that the churches send him “a fragrant aroma and acceptable sacrifice to God (in worship)” (Philippians 4:18 JP). And his own death for Christ he calls a “drink offering” to God (II Timothy 4:6).

This is what it means when we read things like, “Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (I Corinthians 10:31). And “whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father” (Colossians 3:17 NASB). This is the central New Testament action of worship: to act in a way that reflects the glory of Godto do a thing in the name of Jesus with thanks to God. But the New Testament uses those greatest of all worship sentences without any reference to Sunday worship services. They describe life. Again, the essence of worship is not external, localized acts, but an inner, God ward experience that shows itself externally not primarily in church services. The fundamental reason for this is probably that the Old Testament was mainly a “come see” religion and the New Testament fulfillment is a “go tell” religion.

Now let me address the question: What is the essence of that inner experience which we call worship?
Worship, whether an inner experience of the heart or an outward act of the body, or of the congregation collectivelyis a magnifying of God. That is, it is an act that shows how magnificent He is. It is an act that reveals or expresses how great and glorious He is. Worship is all about consciously reflecting the worth or value of God. Paul’s passion is that what he does with his body, whether in life or death, will always be worship. In life and death his mission is to magnify Christto show that Christ is magnificent, to exalt Christ, and demonstrate that He is great. That’s plain from verse 20, that Christ shall be “exalted in my body, whether by life or death.” Paul knew in his heart that God willed his life to continue after his Roman imprisonment, he would be more determined than ever to minister to the saints. That would be good for all the churches that Paul ministered to. But, on the other hand, if God called him home that would be gain also. Death would take him into a deeper intimacy with the Lord. And that is especially good.

Therefore, the inner essence of worship is cherishing Christ as gain, indeed as more gain than all that life can offerfamily, career, retirement, fame, food, and friends. The essence of worship is experiencing Christ as gain. It is savoring Him. It is naming Him as the end of your search. Jesus is the object of your faith. John Piper, whom I quote often, brings this topic together in one sentence. He says, “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.” Christ is magnified in my death, when in my death I am satisfied with Him, when I experience death as gain because I gain Him. Or another way to say it is that the essence of praising Christ is prizing Christ. Christ will be praised in my death, if in my death He is prized above life. The inner essence of worship is prizing Christ. Are you satisfied in Jesus Christ? You can by receiving Him as Savior and Lord and walking with Him daily through prayer and praise. Tell Him often that you are thankful for Him. Tell Him often that you are glad in Him. He’s waiting to hear from you. Start talking to Him and enjoy the fellowship of worship.

Keep the faith. Stay the course. Jesus is coming again. I believe it’s time to WORSHIP!

The Art of Stained Glass

As with all forms of art, its beauty is defined by the
sensations it arouses. Perhaps the most intriguing aspect in the
art of stained glass is in its’ versatility. It’s durable, yet
fragile, challenging, but yielding to the experienced hands of
the artist. I discovered this form of art some seven years ago
when my girlfriend and I decided to take a series of evening
classes at a local stained glass retail store. We took six
classes and I have been hooked ever since.

If you are in need of a way to take away the stresses of
everyday life I would recommend stained glass as great way to
“download” and at the same time get into a new hobby. It is a
form of self-meditation. The steps you’ll follow in arriving at
your finished work of art will teach you self-discipline, and
provide a great sense of artistic achievement. And if you’re
like me, you will not be able to get enough of it. That’s when
you’ll want to expand out and begin doing projects for others.

But be careful, once word gets out that you’re into stained
glass, all of your relatives (you know the ones) will be the
first to ask you to make them something. Actually, it’s not so
bad at first, because they make great test cases and you’ll want
to experiment.

Where to begin? I suggest a visit to your local stained glass
retailer. While not all towns have one (here is a great business
opportunity for you) a look into your telephone book should
yield a location or two or you can perform an Internet search
for local retailers. Start by inquiring into whether or not they
run classes. Most retailers usually do because it’s a source of
increased revenues to them (they know that you’ll probably be
buying your supplies from them). Cost of classes will be
relatively moderate for the same reasons. Check out your local
County Colleges as well. My instructor also taught night classes
there.

TIP: Bring a friend with you; it will add to the fun and you’ll
be able to compare notes.

The place you’ll be taking the classes from will no doubt also
provide you with the basic beginners kit, which will contain the
tools needed to get you started. Expect to find a glass cutter;
there a variety of types and you should choose the one that your
most comfortable with. I have tried a variety myself but in the
end settled for the basic non-oil filled type. A breaker,
similar to pliers, is used to snap off the glass after being
scored. A specially designed scissor is used to cut out your
pattern, and of course a soldering iron is used to join the cut
pieces of glass together. Expect to pay somewhere in the
neighborhood of $100.

There are other items that you’ll need along the way, but they
will be available to you during your classes, such as the
grinder, which is used to grind down excess glass, not removed
by the cutting process and to polish off the edges of the cut
glass. This last part is important because of the foiling
process that takes after the glass is ground down. Foiling is a
process whereby the copper foil is placed around the edges of
the ground glass. The foil is sticky on one side allowing it to
adhere to the glass. The purpose of the copper foil is to
provide a surface for the solder to stick too.

A word on foiling. Most of us are familiar with the traditional
form of stained glass that we have encountered in churches which
employ the use of a lead came between the glass pieces. Copper
foiling is an alternative to the lead came and is no doubt the
first place a new student to the art of stained glass will
begin. Only after one has mastered the “foil”, should you
proceed to the “came”. Besides, foiling is a much easier
process, especially for the beginner. I still prefer this method
over the came method.

There is a little more to the art of stained glass than what I
have described thus far, but the fundamental steps outlined
below will give you a basic outline on what to expect.

Plan your design; will it be for a window, skylight… the
possibilities will astound you. Let your imagination take you,

Sketch out your design or use a bought pattern available
through your retailer,

Cut out the individual pieces from your pattern using those
special scissors I mentioned earlier,

Apply the cut pattern pieces to the glass to be cut,

Using the glasscutter, score and break (not in the literal
sense) each piece

Grind off the excess glass

“Foil” each piece of glass

Solder the pieces together

Clean your work, and

Display your masterpiece!

You will soon come to discover your own favorite step in the art
of stained glass. For some, it will be in the designing stages,
that challenge of coming up with your own unique design. For
myself, my love for the art lies in the cutting of the glass.
There is a final moment of truth that comes after you have
scored the glass with the glass cutter; this is the part where I
hold my breath. As you force the glass to run (I’ll explain that
in another article), you’ll begin to see the glass crack along
the scored line as you hoped it would. With all things in the
universe being wonderful, the glass breaks as you had intended.
Occasionally it won’t; that’s the breaks! But don’t worry, glass
is relatively inexpensive and you’ll get it the next time.

New UK Laws on Staff Dispute Resolution and Disciplinary Procedures

October 2004 saw the introduction of the Employment Act 2002, which has brought a new approach to staff dispute resolution.

It has long been acknowledged that disputes in the workplace are disruptive, stressful, and costly – both for employers and employees. Once time and legal expenses are taken into account, the average cost of an employment tribunal for a UK employer is £2,000. In addition, it is said that 50% of employees who take a case to a tribunal end up in lower paid or lower status jobs after the hearing, and almost a quarter find themselves unemployed.

In a recent twelve month period, the UK employment tribunal service received over 94,000 claims. But research showed that in more than 33% of cases, the employee and his or her manager had not had any prior discussion about the problem.

The new legislation in the Employment Act aims to address these problems by:

  • encouraging both employers and employees to discuss disputes
  • promoting alternative ways to resolve disputes
  • enabling the employment tribunal system to work more effectively.

Since October 2004, all employers and employees have been required to follow a new three-step process when dealing with most dismissals, disciplinary actions or grievances. If they don’t, they could face a financial penalty should a dispute reach
a tribunal.

The stages in this new three-step process are as follows:

  1. Write a letter explaining the issue

If an employer is considering disciplinary action, he must put the reasons for this in writing to the employee. Similarly, if the employee has a grievance against his employer, he must put it in writing in a letter to his employer.

  2. Have a meeting to discuss the issue

A face to face meeting must take place between the employer and the employee to discuss the issues raised in the letter. There must be a suitable amount of time prior to the meeting for the recipient of the letter to consider the other party’s complaint. Following the meeting, the employee must be informed of the employer’s decision and notified of their right to appeal.

  3. Have an appeal meeting if required

This may happen after sanctions have already been imposed. The employer must inform the employee of the
    outcome of the appeal.

The above standards are intended to be a minimum which must be met by all UK employers. However, so long as these minimum standards are complied with, companies are free to personalise the procedures to suit the needs of their own business.

Remember, if a dispute reaches tribunal and one of the parties has not followed the three-step process in full, they will almost certainly face penalties.

If an employer fails to follow the new rules, then any award made to the employee by a tribunal will be increased
by a minimum of 10% up to a maximum of 50%

If the employee fails to follow the procedure, any award they are adjudged to receive is reduced by a minimum of 10% up to a maximum of 50%.

In light of the new regulations, all businesses need to:

  • Understand the new laws
  • Review existing disciplinary and grievance procedures
  • Put in place new procedures where none exists
  • Inform employees of their new rights and where they can go to obtain more information
  • Update company documents such as the employee handbook to reflect the new legislation
  • Follow the new three-step process when dealing with any disciplinary matters of staff grievances.

What does it mean to be a fashion designer?

Being a fashion designer is to design clothing and accessories and to organize production and marketing of the designs. High fashion-fashion designers work for themselves and pay close attention to detailing clothes for individual clients. Some individual clients may prefer certain high-fashion designers who are independent contractors. Instead incorporating fashions created by other designers into their work for the mass-market designers employed in apparel manufacturing are responsible for less original work.

What steps are necessary to get myself ready for this job? You need to be naturally artistic and have an eye for aesthetics. This type of work is best suited for people who are self-motivated, organized and able to complete tasks without constant supervision by a boss. An extensive education is not always as important as the designer’s portfolio when searching for a job.

Formal training is still expected of designers. A degree from an institute that offers fashion design courses is a must. If you are interested in a bachelor’s degree in art or a bachelor’s degree in fashion design, either of which with an art major and an emphasis on costume design, then you can attend a fashion design school in the state of California. Other states do not provide this option.

A favorite at many wedding receptions

A favorite at many wedding receptions edible wedding favors will always please the vast majority of guests. If you cannot make up your mind about whether they should be sweet or savory, you can guarantee it will be the sweet variety that gets the ‘big thumbs up’. Of course if you want to make it simple, then stick to a regular chocolate bar, perhaps with a specially created outer wrapper. Chocolate candy bars come in so many varieties it can be difficult to choose something you can guarantee everyone one will appreciate. Many companies exist that can create special wrappers that should have details of the wedding printed on them even if everything else is from a standard template.

Just to complete the favor, why not have the picture of the bride and groom printed on the wrapper as well? Some couples decide that their edible wedding favor will consist of a special tin of candy. There is also typically the option of personalizing the tin by including the wedding date and the name of the bride and the groom. Tins are always useful so once the candy has been eaten, it can be used to store many small items that might be lost otherwise. Almost everyone likes candy and that is why such a large percentage of weddings feature it as their edible wedding favor.

One unique way to give out candy as wedding favors is to use large glass bowls as the centerpieces for the tables and fill the bowls with the bride and grooms’ favorite types of candy. Otherwise a small container, which can be themed if appropriate, can be used instead. You can guarantee it won’t take long before the guests start filling their boxes with the candy. If you really don’t like the idea of candy as an edible wedding favor, why not consider using cookies instead. You can select cookies which are rather plain in nature but place them in keepsake boxes with the bride and grooms’ names as well as the date of the wedding.

Plain cookies are also easier to use if you decide to have your images inserted onto them. It won’t be difficult locating a bakery that can do this type of work and you can speed up the process even more by supplying your own ideas on how you would like the cookies to look. There is no reason why the edible wedding favors cannot be drinks; there are plenty to choose from but coffee and tea are likely to be the most popular. There are a number of specialty teas and coffees available which can then be packaged in something appropriate for the wedding. Once again, the packaging can contain information about the bride and groom and if it is a metal or plastic container it can be used at a later stage an will not go to waste. Perhaps these suggestions will help you decide what favors you will give to your guests.
